Before recording
- Pick one task and aim for two to five minutes. Start just before the task and stop right after it. Time on task includes detours unless you trim them in the editor.
- Record the full screen so switches between apps remain visible.
- Think aloud: say what you are doing and what you expect to happen. A silent recording has no transcript or narration sentiment.
- Use test data. Close email, chat and anything showing other people’s information. Never show real passwords or payment, health or ID details.
- Get consent from anyone who can be seen or heard. Use the participant notice template to prepare.
Recording tools
- Windows: Snipping Tool, with an area covering the full screen and the microphone on.
- macOS: Shift+Command+5, Record Entire Screen, with a microphone selected under Options.
- Other options: OBS Studio or a full-screen Loom recording you download.
