# Record a useful session

> Capture one task, clear narration and the screen context.

## Before recording

* Pick one task and aim for two to five minutes. Start just before the task and stop right after it. Time on task includes detours unless you trim them in the editor.
* Record the full screen so switches between apps remain visible.
* Think aloud: say what you are doing and what you expect to happen. A silent recording has no transcript or narration sentiment.
* Use test data. Close email, chat and anything showing other people's information. Never show real passwords or payment, health or ID details.
* Get consent from anyone who can be seen or heard. Use the [participant notice template](https://lighterjourneys.com/help/participant-notice) to prepare.

## Recording tools

* **Windows:** Snipping Tool, with an area covering the full screen and the microphone on.
* **macOS:** Shift+Command+5, Record Entire Screen, with a microphone selected under Options.
* **Other options:** OBS Studio or a full-screen Loom recording you download.

So far, accuracy has been measured on Windows recordings only.

## Formats and language

Upload MP4, MOV, WebM or M4V. Narrate in English; other languages are not transcribed correctly yet. Your workspace's length and size limits appear when you upload.

## Click highlights

For accurate clicks, add Camtasia's click rings before export. Highlights from other recorders have not been checked yet, and the macOS Show Mouse Clicks circle is not read.

## After upload

A quick check tells you whether the session can be analyzed before you use an analysis. It takes about a minute once it starts. On the Free plan it may wait in a queue first. Read the upload check result and correct any problem before starting an analysis.
